Spoiled turkeys, magic turkeys, mean turkeys and lots of turkey hunting are all part of a book of stories published by Sissy Tunnell’s third grade class at Bruce Elementary.
The hard-cover book was part of a writing and art project with each student authoring their own story and illustration.
“The more fun the writing appears the more they love it,” Tunnell said.
All of the illustrations were judged by teachers at BES and Benson Clements’ was chosen for the cover of the book.
“I love drawing,” Benson said. “My story was about pumpkin pie, so I drew a turkey and pumpkin pie.”
Following are a few of the stories from students included in the book.
Spoiled Turkey
By Sanai Rose
It was turkey and dressing day in the lunchroom. I cleaned my tray! I ate every bite! In class, my belly started to grumble and tumble inside. I could tell this was not going well. So, Mrs. Tunnell called my mom. This turned into a trip to Dr. Wells. Spoiled turkey was the diagnosis for me.
Grace
By Christan Faith Thelemann
Once upon a time, I went into the woods and met a turkey. I decided to name her Grace. Grace followed me home. Mom said she could come. Then one day my mom surprised me with a Thanksgiving supper. Oh no, I screamed! Did mom cook Grace for our dinner? I ran quickly to look outside. Thank goodness, Grace was safe and gobbling in the back yard. Finally, I’m ready to eat my Thanksgiving dinner.
Turkey Search
By Zander Birmingham
It was Thanksgiving eve, my mom had nothing to cook. So, my mom sent me and my dog Jasper to find a turkey. But here was the thing, I didn’t know where to get one. So I went to the zoo. I asked the gorillas and the giraffes about seeing any turkeys. They said, “No turkeys here.” I searched everywhere. No luck. So my adventure began. I would hunt for a Thanksgiving bird in the woods. Finally, after a couple of hours a huge gobbler walked out. Boom! My turkey search had ended.
Yumsey
By John Allen Shaw
Once upon a time, there was a Jake named Yumsey. He was no gobbler, and he was illegal to shoot. So one day he found himself in a dark cave. Snatch! Feathers began to fly. Yumsey was in trouble. Five blood thirsty coyotes had snatched him from behind and began to eat Thanksgiving supper. The coyotes licked their lips. Um, yum.
Deer for Thanksgiving
By Oh’Niyah Woodard
Once upon a time the Woodard family was planning a Thanksgiving dinner. The kids asked what is for dinner? They decided to go hunting for a turkey. My baby sister started to cry. “Please don’t shoot that fat turkey.” We need a meat for Thanksgiving, dad said. We heard leaves crackling. There stood Thanksgiving dinner. Deer stew was on the menu. We ate well and we were very thankful for deer meat.
The Old Turkey
By Jermartie Poindexter
Once upon a time there was an old turkey that lived long, long ago. It was known to be the meanest turkey ever. He wouldn’t let no one get close to him. Then one day I was hunting in the woods. I heard that mean gobbler. I sat quietly and waited until he got closer. Boom! Boom! Feathers went everywhere. I shot that mean old bird. Mom cooked him for Thanksgiving dinner. He was a little tough, but we ate him anyways.
Chasing a Turkey
By Ashton Pierce
It was Thanksgiving Day and I saw a turkey in our neighborhood. My mom said, “Get that bird!” My friends and me started chasing him. He was really fast. We started calling him Speedy. We ran till our legs were like noodles. Speedy flew up in a tall oak tree. We got a ladder. We decided to leave him alone. My mom had to shop at the grocery store for a Thanksgiving bird. Chasing a turkey was hard work.
Turkey Disaster
By Oscar Gonzalez
One day it was raining on Thanksgiving Day. I wanted to go outside because I saw a magic turkey. So I went outside and touched it. We switched bodies. The boy was the turkey and the turkey was the boy. Then I ran and met a hunter. He saw me and said, “I’m gonna shoot you and eat you.” I ran till the hunter got tired. It was so much fun. Now my family was trying to cook me and eat me. I touched the boy who was me and we switched bodies again. My family cooked him and ate him. I was very happy they ate the turkey and not me. I don’t want to be part of a turkey disaster on Thanksgiving Day.
