Calhoun Academy Jr. Beta members got an extended break from school. Katelyn Eubanks, Connor Caviness, Keegan Hubbard, Dowden Taylor, Sarah Kate Watkins, Megan Stribling, Britney Macon, Coben Parker, Hayden Todd, and George Dean Tedder all attended the 2016 Jr. Beta convention in Biloxi, MS.
The convention was held from March 21-22. Sunday night, the eighth grade Beta students competed in the Tower of Power. They were required to build a straw tower as tall as possible that could still withhold the weight of a tennis ball.
The following day the students were able to watch the group talent competitions, attend the first general session, vote for the new Junior Beta officers, and attend the Beta dance. On Tuesday, they attended the second general session and the new officers were announced.
While there, the Beta students also competed in competitions. The eighth grade competed in the “Tower of Power” and the t-shirt competition.
The sixth and seventh grades participated in the “Spotlight Your Club”. Katelyn Eubanks competed in the oils or acrylics competition, and Keegan Hubbard competed in the Black and White Photography. Katelyn Eubanks, an eighth grader, said her favorite part of the trip “was competing in the Tower of Power”.
Connor Caviness a fellow eighth grader said his favorite part “was the party”. When the sponsor, Francheska James, was asked what she enjoyed most, she replied, “I enjoyed being able to watch our Calhoun Academy students as they learned exactly what being a Beta consists of and being able to see the pride on their faces when they completed tasks designed to promote leadership skills.”
While there the students were also able to see the beach. They are all looking forward to attending the convention next year.
