Calhoun County municipalities closed out the 2015-16 fiscal year on the positive side in sales tax revenues.
Bruce led the county with $524,745 in sales tax revenue last fiscal year, which ended June 30. It was the second consecutive year and the first two in the town’s history it topped the half million dollar mark. It was more than $22,000 above last year’s final total.
Bruce started the new fiscal year off with $44,346 in sales tax returns for July.
Calhoun City recorded $327,230 in sales tax revenue in 2015-16. That was an approximate $7,000 increase over prior year. The town took in $26,035 in July to start the new year.
Vardaman’s total for last year was $123,622, which was virtually equal to the prior year. They continued on that pace in July with $10,393 in returns.
Derma finished 2015-16 with $101,231, an increase of more than $13,000 from the prior year. They recorded $10,340 in July.
Pittsboro had the biggest jump in the county for last fiscal year going from less than $6,000 in sales tax returns in 2014-15 to $16,324 in 2015-16. Pittsboro started the new fiscal year with $1,439 in July.
Big Creek’s sales tax returns for last fiscal year were up $1,600 at $5,216 for the year. Slate Springs was down $1,800 at $3,025.
Mississippi municipalities receive 18.5% of the total sales tax generated within a city. The state keeps the rest as well as all generated outside city limits.
