Derma alderwoman Kendra Wright was the first municipal qualifier in the county as she seeks a second term on that town’s board.
Vardaman Mayor James Casey, who is seeking a fifth term, and alderman Wilbur Holmes both qualified there as Republicans.
Bruce, Pittsboro, Calhoun City, Slate Springs and Big Creek all reported no qualifiers as of yet.
Calhoun City and Big Creek Town Hall’s both reported several potential candidates have picked up paperwork to get qualified.
All seven mayors in the county are expected to seek re-election. Dock Gabbert will be going for a 13th term. Pittsboro’s Reda Bullard would be running for a seventh.
Big Creek Mayor Dwight DeVall plans to seek a fifth term as mayor. Calhoun City Mayor J.R. Denton is expected to qualify to run for a fourth term in office. Bruce’s Rudy Pope and Slate Springs’ Carrie Gregg are completing their first terms.
Bruce and Calhoun City had the only contested mayoral races in 2013. Bruce also had four contested races for alderman. Derma and Pittsboro, whose aldermen run at-large, had the only other contested races.
Qualifying continues through March 3.
