Calhoun City Mayor J.R. Denton showed plans of the new Sonic to the aldermen at last night’s board meeting. It will have 18 bays and a drive-through, “just like the one in Baldwyn,” Denton said.
Auto Zone, which will be located in the old Dollar General building, is set to open in July, but could possibly be sooner, he said.
Board members were introduced to the new water meter reader, Easton Doles, who was hired at a special called meeting March 23.
Alderman Larry Bratton voiced his concern over four-wheelers and side-by-sides on the city streets. Denton authorized Police Chief Tito Lopez to begin issuing tickets to violators.
A citizen who was on the agenda to address the board did not show up, but Denton said it was in regard to parking a car on the square to sell. Motion was made and seconded that no one may park a vehicle on the square for the purpose of selling it.
Patsy Zeidman and Carol Easley addressed the board about an upcoming event at the Calhoun City Library. Dr. John Dyson, an expert on the Chickasaws, will speak about the history and language of the Chickasaw people in this area, on April 22 at 1 p.m. Both spoke highly of Dyson and how interesting he is, and encouraged everyone to attend this event. “Dyson is pivotal in the preservation of the Chickasaw language,” said Zeidman.
The mayor also called attention to door-to-door salespeople who are in Calhoun City at this time. People who are in town for these purposes are asked to register at City Hall. Denton wants to let the citizens know they have the right to ask salesmen if they have registered at City Hall or they can ask them to. “People have the right to check them out,” he said.
In recognition of MS celebrating 200 years in December, bicentennial celebrations have been set statewide. The North Celebration will be held June 24 at the Gertrude Ford Center in Oxford. In connection with this, Denton obtained two bicentennial flags from the MS Economic Council to be flown the remainder of 2017.
Approval was given to start application process for CDBG grant and grant/loan from Rural Development for a new water well project.
