The 2017 municipal elections have concluded in Calhoun County with on average only one-fourth of the eligible voters in each town participating.
Calhoun City was the only town this year with a contested mayor’s election and had the largest turnout at 36%.
Derma and Vardaman both had contested races for their boards of aldermen and each had 20% of their registered voters turn out at the polls.
The statewide average this year was 35% for all municipal elections. Bruce didn’t have any contested races this year, but in 2013 when they did have contested mayor and aldermen races their turnout was also 35%.
By comparison, 60% of the county’s registered voters participated in the last presidential election and the last countywide election involving supervisors and sheriff had 52% participation.
