The Calhoun County School Board will host a public hearing Thursday evening to take comments on their proposed budget for next fiscal year which includes a near 3-mil tax increase.
The public hearing is scheduled for 5:45 p.m. where the superintendent and school board will receive comments from the public on the proposed $21.9 million budget. Just over $3 million of that comes from local ad valorem taxes, which the school district intends to increase.
The proposed increase would result in an approximate $50 increase on the average Calhoun County home.
Jo Clanton, Chief Financial Officer with the school district, told the school board in a budget workshop last week the increase was recommended by the Mississippi Department of Education and is intended to help offset cuts from state funds the district has endured the last several years.
