State test scores released to the public last week by the Mississippi Department of Education showed Calhoun County Schools scored above the state average.
“We did have areas that scored exceptionally well and some that continue to need improvement,” said Raven Hawkins, testing coordinator for Calhoun County Schools.
“As for the high school assessments, it is a misrepresentation of what those subject area teachers really achieved. Primary students in those areas (which are the students that are testing in that subject for the first time) did much better than what was released to the media,” Hawkins said. “The media got a bulk unit of data that included each time a student retested. For example, if a student retested three times in the school year, that student went in the pot of data three times. The upside of this is that the final accountability ratings will not include the retesters.”
Accountability ratings for the district and each school won’t be released until October.
