Calhoun County Supervisors moved forward with their requests for funding for two separate improvement projects in the county at their meeting Monday in Pittsboro.
The board authorized county engineer Chodie Myers to complete needed paperwork to potentially receive more than $220,000 for overlaying the taxi-way and parking areas at the Calhoun County Airport.
Myers said the time line would be later this summer for opening bids and getting the actual grant funding but he thought the county had a good opportunity for approval.

The board also authorized Board President Barney Wade to sign a memorandum of agreement for “Federal Lands Access Project” which involves the long sought-after improvements for CR 306 (Big Creek Road). That project would still be years away if federal funding was ultimately approved.

In other news from the meeting, Interim Sup. Jean Ann Casey attended the meeting to introduce herself to the board and offer her assistance if ever needed by the supervisors.
“We’re certainly very grateful for your assistance during our snow days and want you to know you can call on me if ever needed,” Casey said.
In a related matter, the board approved a resolution requested by Randy Kelley with Three Rivers for an Economic Development Opportunity Partnership (EDOP).

An effort is being made in the Legislature to allow the formation of the EDOP that would enable local governments and school districts to “enhance economic development on industrial projects ranging from $10 million-$99 million” with additional ad valorem exemptions.
Attorney Sonny Clanton and CEDA Director Sheila Freely both noted these efforts are more aimed at larger counties but that Calhoun could benefit indirectly from such projects and encouraged support.
The resolution must also be approved by the school board which is expected to hold a special called meeting soon for that purpose.

Other items approved by the board:
•Final payment for Baptist Calhoun Administration Building project.
•Low quote of $797.50 from Adam Brown for painting at the multi-purpose building. Only other quote submitted was from Thomas Goodson for $800.
•Renewal of the law library contract.
•Hired Dot Fleming to work part time at the multi-purpose building as needed following the resignation of Stephanie Hitt.
•Postal repairs at 82 CR 102 and 725 Hwy 9W.
