BHS students Caitlin McCormick, Callie Cain, Madison May and Caden Austin went to Mississippi College in Clinton February 8 with teachers Rebecca King and Sandy Aron to compete in the Mississippi Science and Mathematics Tournament.
The competition has been held at Mississippi College since 1975, and students from schools around the state attend each year.
Students were sorted into classrooms to complete two written tests on subjects of their choice, such as Chemistry, Biology, Computer Science, Mathematics, and Physics. The tests lasted roughly two hours.

After taking a lunch, students returned to MC to participate in a team competition, where multiple teams were shown various questions pertaining to Mathematics and Science, and raced to get the correct answers before the other teams.
The team of BHS students made it to the final round of the competition.

McCormick scored in the top 20 percentile of the Chemistry and Biology tests and received a $1,000 scholarship for each year she attends Mississippi College.
Austin scored in the second percentile of Computer Science, receiving a $4,000 scholarship for each year he attends Mississippi College.
“It’s great to have gotten to do this my senior year,” said McCormick. “I think we did well for an inexperienced team, and I think other people will do even better in the future. I was also fortunate enough to place in the top 20% of scores in Chemistry and Biology competitions and win a scholarship. While on campus, I learned more about the Science Department at Mississippi College. It made me even more excited to attend the college as a Chemistry major in the fall.”

“I am ecstatic to have scored within the top two percentile of Computer Science. It was a new experience for me, and honestly, I was a bit nervous going in, but now that I understand the test, I plan to get in the first percentile next year,” said Austin.
