A total of 18 candidates have applied for the county’s superintendent of schools position. That includes the three local candidates – Calhoun City Elementary Principal Dr. Lisa Langford, Vardaman Elementary Principal DeDee Lee and Calhoun City High School teacher and coach Chad White.

The school board met Monday night for an initial review of the 18 applications in executive session.
“We reviewed them in executive session because we wanted to keep it confidential because of the current jobs many of these have,” Board President Will Fleming said.

He explained the board discussed in the private session how they would vet each of the candidates and make certain with the Mississippi Department of Education (MDE) that they are all qualified.
“We still have a lot of questions for MDE (about the process) and need them to do background checks on these and then we’ll look at finding a time to get back together,” Fleming said.

In other news from the meeting, the board approved the creation of a new teaching position for the new “Math Ready” course that is required by MDE for 2018-19.
They granted approval for CCHS students to attend Education Day at the Memphis Redbirds park on April 11.
They agreed the roofing repairs at the Career and Technical Center are an emergency and contracted with Gary Shafer and Associates for the project.
They also authorized the superintendent to act on any bids under $275,000 for the work.
