Pittsboro says no to additional fire plug

The Pittsboro board discussed briefly the fireplug Reginal Baskin asked for on Oldtown Road at their meeting Tuesday. They determined the price would be too much for the town because the line isn’t on his side of the road.
Alderman Gerald Hubbard pointed out it shouldn’t be installed regardless because there’s not enough pressure on that line to work off a fireplug.
“You couldn’t fight a fire off a fireplug on that line,” Hubbard said.
“I’m afraid it would collapse the line,” Alderman Fred Bullard said.

“I think it would be quicker to just run a truck back and forth to the nursing home,” Alderman Jimmy Franklin said. “I hate it.”
“This just isn’t going to be feasible for us,” said Vice-Mayor Cindy Hubbard, who presided over the meeting.
The town said somebody ran over the fence near the town dumpsters and it happened to be the one night Franklin said he had removed the security cameras installed there to replace the cards in them. The cameras were installed to catch people illegally dumping.

The board asked Water Director Charles Mahan to see if he can repair it. He noted several of the poles were bent and broken.
The board also discussed a number of people that complained over the past month about how high their water bill was.

Mahan said it’s difficult to determine in a lot of the instances if there’s a meter issue or something else. He said he’s tried to install a new meter where he could. Each meter cost on average $50.
“I don’t have an objection to putting a new meter in if the old meter is clearly a problem, but that’s not always the case,” Franklin said.
