Rufus Roger Hubbard was born January 8, 1922 in Calhoun County to Chester and Lottie Parker Hubbard.
He married Robbie Sue Holloway January 19, 1946 and they were married for 55 years. He was age 79 when he died February 3, 2001.
In November 1942, Roger was called to serve his country. He had lived his entire life in the Pleasant Hill Community in Calhoun County, MS. He had never been outside this county in all of his 21 years.
He was suddenly called to the military service and was sent to Camp Shelby, MS and was issued his orders. He was at Camp Shelby for about two weeks and then sent to Camp Blanding, Florida. There he received about six months of training.
He was then sent to Camp Lejeune, North Carolina for more training. After this he was sent to Camp Phillips in Kansas for a uniform test to see if he would withstand the cold, heat and gas.
From there he was sent to Fort Meade in Maryland where he boarded a ship for about two weeks. They later they landed in France.
The war was raging and he fought his way through France, Belgium, Holland and Germany.
He was wounded in Germany in November of 1944 and was sent to England where he recuperated.
After his recovery, he was sent back to Paris, France. From France he went to Frankfurt, Germany where he went into the Army/Air Force. He was then sent to a place in Bonn, Germany until V day.
He came home in September 1945 and was discharged in November 1945. The Purple Heart was just one of several medals that he received.
