When contacted by The Journal, Lopez, 61, said he had submitted his retirement papers to the state.
Lopez has worked nearly 30 years in law enforcement, two-thirds of that in Calhoun City and the last three years as chief succeeding Benny Langford.

Mayor Amye Hill said she notified all of her aldermen of Lopez’s decision Monday afternoon, and their next step would be to appoint an interim chief until they can hire someone else.
Lopez’s departure leaves the Calhoun City Police Department with three full-time officers – Jeremy Pounders, who is scheduled to attend the police academy in August; Ezra Conner and Shawn Turner. All three were hired since Lopez was named chief.

The only other officer is George Casmus, 72, an unpaid volunteer who has been helping with various police duties.
Mayor Hill called a special meeting of the board for Tuesday night where Lopez's resignation was officially accepted. She said she would get to work immediately on finding a replacement and then report back to the board.
