Calhoun County firemen have responded to 17 fire calls over the past week – six house fires, 10 grass fires and one vehicle fire. There were no injuries reported from any of them.

The house fires began with a house owned by Doris Haire west of Big Creek on CR 308 at 3 a.m. on Jan. 29. No one was at home at the time of the fire, which completely destroyed the house.

Another major fire occurred Thursday, Jan. 30 when the home of Dawn Collums Young on CR 270 just north of Bruce near Paul’s Tires was destroyed by an 11:15 p.m. fire. No one was at home at the time of the fire. The house was a total loss.

Bruce and Chickenbone firemen had been on the scene of a grassfire on county roads 260 and 235 when they got the call. The fire was reported by a passer-by. A relief fund for Young has been established at Hometown Cafe in Bruce where anyone can donate.

Two other minor calls for residential fires came on Bailey Street in Bruce and on Jackson Street in Calhoun City.

Tuesday afternoon firemen were called to the home of Bernadette Sanders in Derma. The house on Mathis Street didn’t suffer significant damage at the time, but the fire restarted after midnight and the house was a complete loss when firemen received the call to respond again.
