Calhoun County Supervisors will host a public hearing Friday, Sept. 13 at 10 a.m. to receive comment for the proposed one mil tax increase for next fiscal year.
The increase is the result of the increase passed by the school board. Supervisors don’t have authority to deny increases requested by the school district. They must be absorbed into the county budget.
The 4% tax increase from the schools, the first since a 2% increase in 2009, will generate approximately $150,000 additional dollars that will go entirely to infrastructure improvements. New roofs for Bruce and Calhoun City High Schools are already moving forward.

Schafer, Zahner, and Zahner architects have been hired to oversee the projects. The school board had originally budgeted for the estimated cost, but the latest estimate for the work exceeded the budget by more than $170,000. That increase will consume all the revenue from the tax increase.
Supervisors intend to approve the proposed budget immediately following the public hearing.
