An extensive progress report was given by Calhoun City High School Principal Mike Ray and assistant principal Nicole Chandler on the work they are doing with grades 5-8 at the monthly meeting of the Calhoun County School Board Monday night.
“It has been an uphill battle, but we’re getting there,” said Ray, “it is a work in progress.”

“We have hired interventionists in the weaker areas of math and English, and we are doing a lot of one on one and small group,” he said. A new math and reading program have been implemented, and they have already seen growth in both areas.
“We are honing in on assessments, and there is goal setting for students and teachers,” he said.
They are offering incentives to the kids, along with positive reinforcement, and trying to get more parents involved.
Presenting numbers to the board, Chandler said, “We are progressing and we are definitely moving in the right direction.”
In routine personnel action, resignations were approved for teachers Allison Movitz and Keely Fleming, and Clint Faust from all coaching duties immediately, and as teacher effective May 22, 2020. Jenna Beth Hamilton was approved as a teacher replacing Tony Griffin.
Substitute teachers approved were Melody Hamilton, Karen Wright and Candice McGreger, and substitute bus aide Linda Gail Haire.
Approval was given to purchase a 2020 school bus, and for CCHS teacher Cassandra Shawk to take her U.S. History students to Birmingham, AL to the Civil Rights Institute next month.
Ray also mentioned a big interest in archery as an extracurricular activity and reported both male and female students are interested.
Request was made and approved to change the next regular board meeting to Monday, Dec. 16 at the district office.
In the superintendent’s report: Dr. Lisa Langford offered congratulations to CC football team as they progress in playoffs, Bruce for making to the playoffs, and to the Bruce and Calhoun City Bands for performances at state competition.
