Calhoun County 4-H Livestock club members had an outstanding year with their meat goat project.
This is the first year three qualified market goats for the Dixie National Sale of Champions. This year’s sale included 46 champion market animals including 12 goats. The preliminary sale total for the sale was $404,395, breaking the last year’s record by more than $20,000. Sale proceeds for the 12 goats reached $88,870.
During its 51-year run, the sale has generated $7.68 million. It has awarded $949,700 in scholarship dollars to 4-H and FFA youth since it began the program in 1993. Calhoun County 4-H Livestock club members Jensyn Cain, Hayden Barnett, Layla and Jillian Bramlitt were among 1,619 4-H and FFA youth exhibiting 2,221 head of livestock at the Dixie National Jr. Round-Up. Cain received Lightweight Champion Market goat with her project.
Barnett received Heavyweight Champion market goat and Mississippi Bred Heavyweight Champion Market goat with his project. The sale is made possible through a large number of supporters including individual donors as well as businesses statewide who purchase the animals and donate funds for college scholarship awards at the sale.
Regions Bank, KLLM Transport Service, Empire Truck Sales, Stribling Equipment, Blue Cross Blue Shield of MS, Ergon, Haley and Marsha Barbour, Harry Dendy and Grocer’s Pride participated in purchasing Calhoun County 4-H member’s project goats. There are many other area donors and contributors who have made this possible.
