President Donald Trump, a new state flag, and medical marijuana all were victors in Calhoun County Tuesday.
Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith, U.S. Rep. Trent Kelly, Supreme Court candidate Josiah Coleman, and Donnie Paul Cain for election commissioner were winners in Calhoun as well.
The presidential election remains too close to call this morning. As of 6 a.m. Wednesday, eight states that will decide the next president remained uncalled, as did a handful of Senate races that will determine who controls the chamber.
The eight states are Alaska (3 electoral votes), Arizona (11), Georgia (16), Michigan (16), Nevada (6), North Carolina (15), Pennsylvania (20), Wisconsin (10) and Maine’s Second Congressional District (1).
Joseph R. Biden Jr. has 227 confirmed electoral votes and would need 43 more to win. President Trump has 213 confirmed electoral votes and would need 57 more to win.
Six Senate races were uncalled in five states: Alaska, Georgia, Maine, Michigan and North Carolina.
Pres. Trump easily carried Calhoun County 4,592 (70%) to 1,878 (29%) over Vice President Joseph Biden. Pres. Trump also easily carried Mississippi with 59% of the unofficial vote totals.
Republican U.S. Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith, Mississippi's first woman in Congress, will return to Washington, D.C., for her first full term after fending off Democrat Mike Espy on Tuesday for the second time in two years. She easily carried Calhoun, defeating Espy 4,311 (66%) to 2,112 (32%) in unofficial totals.
U.S. Rep. Trent Kelly carried Calhoun with 75% of the vote over challenger Antonia Eliason. Josiah Coleman was the top vote getter in the Mississippi supreme court race in Calhoun with 67% of the vote compared to Percy Lynchard's $32%.
Mississippi will soon have a new state flag after voters signed off Tuesday on a proposed blue, red and gold design featuring a magnolia flower. The new flag was voted in by Calhoun County by a 4,230-2,224 margin.
Voters overwhelmingly approved medical marijuana in Mississippi. Voters approved the citizen-led Initiative 65 by a 74% majority that will allow doctors to prescribe medical marijuana for 22 debilitating conditions. The marijuana initiative passed in Calhoun as well with 72%.
In the only local race on the ballot, Donnie Paul Cain defeated Jane Farmer 689-521 in the district two election commissioner race.
Voter turnout in Calhoun was 70% (6,582 out of 9,408 registered voters).
