The board of supervisors authorized Sheriff Greg Pollan to seek quotes for the construction of a new evidence room at the sheriff’s office in Pittsboro.
Sheriff Pollan shared an estimate from an area contractor with the board at their Monday morning meeting that suggested the project will cost approximately $14,000.
The work involves knocking out an interior wall and then enclosing a corner on the back of the building with two block walls and extending the roof.
Sheriff Pollan, who currently uses a closet in his office as an evidence room, said the space is desperately needed for proper preservation of evidence.
He referenced a Supreme Court appeal ruling in September of 2013 related to the 1974 Billy Dale Hill murder case in which the county was cautioned to better preserve evidence.
“This will give us a large, secure evidence room that we don’t have now,” Pollan said of his proposal.
“I’m not against it, but we need to see really close what the cost is going to be,” Supervisor J.B. Rogers said.
After much discussion, the board asked Pollan to produce clear specifications for the work to be done and two legal quotes for the project and present them to the board for consideration.
