The Calhoun City Chamber of Commerce has taken steps to add more art around town honoring saxophone legend Ace Cannon.

Laura Edwards

Chamber President Laura Edwards said they have commissioned chainsaw artist Glenn Smith, of Derma, to create a 5-foot carving of a saxophone to be placed around town. The chamber is also working with a metal company to have four to six saxophonoes designed to be artfully painted and strategically placed around town, similar to what Downtown Tupelo has done with guitars.

Edwards said all the new public benches, built by students at the Career Center, have been placed on the square and will be stained next spring.
“We’ve had a lot of positive feedback on them since getting them finished,” she said.
The chamber is seeking volunteers willing to assist witht he construction of the new arbor to be installed on the north side of the square.
The chamber has also ordered new Christmas banners to be installed on light poles around the town this year.

The chamber is also busy working on a number of upcoming events beginning with Octoberfest on Thursday, Oct. 30 on the square.
There is still time for anyone wishing to host a booth to call the chamber and register at 628-6990. The event will feature kids’ games, a costume contest and conclude with a pep rally for the Wildcat football team.

Christmas Open House weekend in Calhoun City will be Nov. 8, Veterans’ Day program is Nov. 11 and the annual Egg Bowl Run will be held Nov. 24 with the exchange of the game ball between ROTC members from Mississippi State and Ole Miss taking place on the ‘City Square.
The Christmas Parade will be held Saturday, Dec. 6 at 7 p.m.
