A small child was badly burned in a late night fire that destroyed a Calhoun City home Sunday.

Calhoun City and Derma firemen responded to the fire at 107 Young Avenue shortly after 11 p.m. The home is owned by Brandy Dungan.

Calhoun City Asst. Fire Chief Larry Goodwin said the home was totally engulfed when they arrived on scene and the woman and small child living in the home were both outside.

An ambulance was called to the scene and treated the small child for third degree burns to the forearm, side of her body and face. Goodwin said she also suffered smoke inhalation. The child was later transported to Jackson for more care on the burns. It has not been confirmed if Dungan was the occupant of the house.

“Fire was coming out of the windows and through the roof when we got on scene,” Goodwin said. “They were lucky to get out.”

Goodwin said the fire appeared to have started in a back bedroom, possibly from a space heater plugged into a wall. He said the home was a “total loss.”

Firemen remained on scene until nearly 2 a.m.
