Judge Howorth teaches legal writing at Jackson seminar

Circuit Judge Andrew Howorth, of Oxford, talked about legal writing during the  Bench-Bar Liaison Committee seminar for law clerks on Jan. 23 in Jackson.

Judge Howorth  was among four panelists who spent an afternoon talking about legal writing.
Other panelists included Circuit Judge Michael Taylor of Brookhaven, Chancery Judge Jerry Mason of Meridian and Mississippi Bar President-Elect Roy Campbell III of Jackson.  Chancery Judge Edward Patten of Hazlehurst served as moderator.

About 75 judicial law clerks who work for trial and appellate courts participated in the day-long writing seminar at the Gartin Justice Building.
U.S. District Judge Dan Jordan of Jackson and 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals Judge Leslie Southwick of Jackson spoke about legal writing from the perspective of the federal judiciary during two morning sessions. U.S.  Magistrate Judge Keith Ball of Jackson talked about ethics for law clerks.

Judge Howorth has served as a circuit judge in the Third Circuit Court, which includes Calhoun County, since  January 2002. He is former chairman of the Conference of Circuit Judges.
He  presides over a Drug Court which he founded in 2007 in Calhoun County and the rest of the Third Circuit District.
