Teaching history to the next generation is one way of preserving it. The Margery B. Rogers Clark Memorial Scholarship was bestowed on Jacob Ruth and Jade Ruth recently at the eighth annual ceremonies and dinner held recently in Bruce.
Jade is the daughter of Gene Ruth and Genia Ruth of Vardaman.
Jacob’s mom and dad are Tony and Kimberly Watkins Ruth from Calhoun City.
The Margery B. Rogers Clark Memorial Scholarship is awarded each year to a deserving Calhoun County High School Senior based on his or her essay about their confederate ancestors or what their Southern heritage means to them.
This scholarship was established to try and get young people interested in their Confederate ancestry.
Margery B. Rogers Clark is the name of the local Order of Confederate Rose Chapter. Clark’s name was chosen for this organization because of her devastating loss during the Civil War.
Clark saw her husband Captain Thomas Goode Clark and two sons Albert Henry and Jonathan killed at the battle of Gettysburg.
Her husband Thomas was a 1st Lt. in the Ida Invincibles Infantry Co. in Mississippi in Dec. 1861; both of his sons served with him. During the Battle of Gettysburg all three were killed in action July 1, 1863.
It is said that when the news of the awful disaster reached home, Mrs. Clark prayed and shouted all night, and she often told her family in speaking of those days that they did not know what sorrow was.
The OCR is an independent support group to the SCV and local camps, governed by its own bylaws and standing rules. The OCR is nonprofit, nonracial, nonpolitical and nonsectarian. The OCR assists the SCV with their historical, educational, benevolent and social functions.
The Order of Confederate Rose is open to all ladies, 12 or older, regardless of lineage. Members from other genealogical organizations are urged to join.
