Vardaman board adopted a job description for the new part time deputy clerk they will be hiring soon. The person will work for 24 hours per week. They plan to interview prior to the next board meeting.
In another matter, the board decided to seek more information about options for moving dirt at the cemetery. Mayor James Casey said excessive dirt needs to be moved from new graves to other graves which have begun to sink. Casey said this will especially be an issue this year due to excessive rain.
Casey said the town could possibly do it, but have talked to another individual about moving the dirt, but also wanted to talk to Larry Dale Parker, of Parker Memorial Funeral Homes for options from them. No dirt work will be able to be done at the cemetery until early summer when the ground is dry.
In another matter, Mayor Casey said that information had been sent to Jackson about the possibility of putting a 4-way stop at the intersection of Hwy 8 and Main St. He said that someone from there was supposed to come and look at the intersection, but had not been here yet.
Mayor Casey told the board that he had met with Willis Engineering and Three Rivers about the problem with levees washing away at the lagoon. They gave him several options for grants, and he told them to apply for all of them.
In another matter, Mayor Casey said they are still waiting on an appraisal on Vardaman Hardware Building – the buildings they are considering purchasing for the city hall complex.
Police Chief Kenny Scott informed the board he wanted to hire Barbara Ward as a officer for the town. Ward is already a certified officer.
