Derma Mayor Dock Gabbert said he believes the sale of the Walmart building is closer, but has no firm details on who the buyer is and what the store will be.

Gabbert said he got a call from a sign company in Alabama asking about size limits on signs in Derma. The man said he worked for a major corporation who was buying some of the closed stores.
Gabbert said “something is in the works, but that’s all I know for sure.”

In another matter, aldermen voted to cancel an intergovernmental agreement with the Mississippi Dept. of Public Safety and to use the remaining funds in the account to purchase two MS WIN (Mississippi Wireless Integrated Network) radios for the police department.
The agreement was set up years ago which allowed for the town of Derma to charge $10 on top of every traffic ticket issued. One percent of the $10 would go to the Dept. of Public Safety and the balance would go into a fund to be used for wireless communications for the local police department.

A new bill which takes effect in July would require that the funds go into the state general fund, instead of back to the town.
They also agreed to make any town police officers deputy court clerks.
Clerk Deneen James said this would allow officers to write court receipts if someone wanted to pay a fine while they were being served a warrant.

Board members A.G. Gibson and Andrea Corbitt were not at the meeting.
Clerk James reported one bad debt this month – William Rodgers.
Next board meeting will be Tuesday, July 5.
