Vardaman board of aldermen set prices to sell the town’s city hall, fire department and police station buildings at the regular meeting of the board last night.
The town voted to advertise for the three buildings and set minimum bids:
City Hall: $58,400
Fire Dept.: $37,500
Police Station: $26,700
If minimum bids are not received, prices can be negotiated, Mayor James Casey said.
Casey said they are making progress on getting into the new municipal complex.
“We’re working on the police area now, hopefully it will be finished in a couple of weeks,” he said.
“The fire department area could possibly be ready to move in a couple of months.”
In another matter, Mayor Casey brought a recommendation to the board from the Sportsplex board to offer youth tackle football in the fall and join an area league.
Jay Vanlandingham, of Vardaman, met with the Sportsplex board and talked to the board last night.
The board voted to pursue the matter by checking if Vardaman is able to get in league and then set a registration to see if enough players sign up.
Practice starts in July. Age groups will be 7-8, 9-10, 11-12. Fifteen are needed for each team, and all three teams have to make to be able to join the league.
Vanlandingham will coach the team, but Sportplex manager Caleb Tedder would handle everything else, purchasing equipment, handling concessions and the gate.
In another matter, the board approved a 10-year tax exemption for Furniture Wood. They requested the exemption citing their recent upgrades in plant equipment for $144,245.
The board also approved a public hearing for a USDA grant resolution to buy a police vehicle. The hearing will be June 21 at 10 a.m.
The bid of $6,699 from Charles Darby of Pope was accepted for the sale of the town’s old backhoe which had been declared surplus property.
Other bids were from Deanco for $3,033 and Durham, $2,777
The board ended the meeting in executive session to discuss a personnel matter.
Alderman Jeff Hamilton was not at the meeting.
