El Jefe Mexican restaurant in Pittsboro made Calhoun County history last Saturday. The Mexican restaurant on the Pittsboro Square became the first establishment in the county to legally serve alcohol.
The restaurant recently received its license from the state to serve liquor under Pittsboro’s local option law.
El Jefe began installing margarita machines last week and Saturday, June 11 was the first official day of sales.
“We had a very good weekend,” restaurant manager Israel Ojeda-Benitez said. “Business was very good. We’re appreciative.”
Beer is not available in the restaurant as Pittsboro is only wet for liquor.
An expansion is also ongoing at the restaurant.
Benitez said they are adding to their seating capacity by as much as 20 with the addition and are also making room to add a “large buffet.”
The renovation is estimated to be complete in a couple of weeks.
