Following up on last month’s addresses to the Calhoun City Mayor and Aldermen, Rita Parker and Amye Hill were again present at the regular board meeting Tuesday night.
Parker had talked with the board about improving the road from Highway 9 to the nursing home.
“It reflects poorly on the town and the community. We need to show that we are proactive and show our support by repairing this road,” she said.
In response Mayor Denton told her the preliminary budget hearing date has been set.
Last month Parker also asked if anything could be done about deterring litter on the square. Police Chief Tito Lopez said they have done several things — extra patrols as much as possible, they have talked to the kids, and have issued one citation.
“We will do the best we can to take care of it,” he said.
In Hill’s follow-up visit, she reported that several letters had been submitted and they had some positive response in the cleanup effort.
“Some have complied and cleaned up,” she said, but her biggest issue now is the swimming pool, citing that “it is not only a health issue, but also an eyesore.”
Public Works Director Lee Burns told about a problem on North Main Extended in which a deep hole just popped up in the middle of the street. Attributing it to a sewer main problem, he said it has been temporarily fixed, but the street will have to be dug up to repair it.
A USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service Ditch Project Grant Award that was applied for three years ago has been awarded and will be used for ditch stabilization on Johnson Avenue. It was noted the budget will be amended to allow for engineer fees.
Court Clerk Deborah Bailey attended the MS Municipal Court Clerks’ Assn. summer seminar.
Calhoun City police officers attended training classes in Bruce and all received their necessary hours for certification.
In the mayor’s report, Denton expressed appreciation to “Rita Parker and some good lawyers because as of this morning at 10:30 the Calhoun City Board of Aldermen and Board of Supervisors entered into a 50 year lease with Baptist Memorial-Calhoun.”
The board adjourned to enter into executive session with a personnel matter requested by Lee Burns at which no action was taken.
