School enrollment down slightly in public schools; decrease more dramatic at Academy

School enrollment around Calhoun County is down for the second consecutive year with the biggest decrease at Calhoun Academy.
Untitled-1Headmaster Donald Pendergrast said the Academy has 130 students enrolled this year in K3-12th grade. That is down from the 175 reported at this time last year. The Academy ended last school year with approximately 150 students enrolled.
This marks the sixth consecutive year the Academy has experienced a decrease in enrollment dating back to 2011 when they reported 198 in school.

The decrease for county schools is less dramatic, falling from 2,547 last year at this time to 2,535 this year.
It’s a second consecutive drop in students for the school district, which reported 2,639 in 2014-15.
Bruce Schools are down from 996 last year to 993 currently. Bruce High School is showing 392, Bruce Elementary 359 and Bruce Upper Elementary 242.

Calhoun City Schools show 858 currently enrolled, compared to 871 last year. Calhoun City Elementary is the largest with 374, followed by Calhoun City Middle School at 252 and Calhoun City High with 232.
Vardaman Schools are up four students this year with a total of 684.
Vardaman Elementary is reporting 393 and Vardaman High 291.
Official school counts aren’t done until October. Enrollment figures tend to vary slightly each day for the first few months of school.
