Calhoun County Supervisors approved an application to the state for “emergency road and bridge repair” projects on eight county roads in a special called meeting last week.

The eight bridges named in the application are BR84 on CR 392, BR58 on CR 401, BR36 on CR 260, BR30 on CR 103, BR125 on CR 308, BR61 on CR 247, BR76 on CR 346, and BR99 on CR 464.

Board President Barney Wade explained these bridges were prioritized based on previous closures or deficiencies and the ability to expedite right-of-way process to begin work.

The potential funding for these bridges is coming from the Mississippi Infrastructure Modernization Act approved by the Legislature in their special session.

“We were told they are going to start releasing some of that funding as early as January, and we wanted to get our application in as quick as possible,” Wade said of the special meeting.

Wade said they also inquired about putting the bridges, two of which were closed earlier this year, on the Big Creek Road (CR 306) in this application, but were told they couldn’t do that because they are already on a submitted application for another grant.

“We’re trying to get funding to fix these bridges all over the county as best we can, but we were told in that instance you can’t double-dip like that,” Wade said.

Clarifying previous news, the courthouse will be closed Dec. 24-25 for Christmas and Dec. 31 and Jan. 1 for New Year’s.
