The offices of chancery clerk, coroner, supervisors in districts three and four, and sheriff will all be contested during the 2019 Calhoun County elections.
Sheriff and district three supervisor attracted the most interest with three candidates in each. Sheriff Greg Pollan will face challenger Kenneth Ray Laney, of Vardaman, in the Republican Primary, with the winner meeting Democrat Roger Westmoreland of Bruce in the November General Election.
Sup. Gwin Longest, of Bruce, faces the same circumstances in district three. He is challenged by Justin Ferguson, of Bruce, in the Democratic primary, with the winner advancing to the General Election in November against Republican Gerald Thompson of Bruce.
The only other local primary battle Aug. 6 will be for coroner with incumbent Jerry Fleming of Calhoun City facing Salena Westmoreland of Derma on the Democratic ballot.
Incumbent Chancery Clerk Romona Tillman, a Democrat, will face Nicole Bennett McGreger, a Republican from Bruce, in the General Election in November.
Sup. Barney Wade, of Calhoun City, a Democrat, will face David Martin, of Derma, an Independent, in the General Election.
County officials who were unopposed are County Attorney Tina Scott, Justice Court Judges Mark Ferguson and Jim Vance, Constables Jay Vanlandingham and Benny Langford, Supervisors Charles Bobo, Homer Moore, and Tony Morgan, and Tax Assessor Bill Malone.
Rep. Jim Beckett, of Bruce, is also unopposed in the district 23 Mississippi House of Representatives race.
The open senate seat in district eight drew a field of seven, three of which are from Calhoun County.
Ben Suber of Bruce and Steve Whitten of Calhoun City both qualified as Republicans. Kegan Coleman of Calhoun City qualified as a Democrat.
Suber and Whitten will be joined by Stephen Scott Griffin of Houston and Beth Luther Waldo of Pontotoc County in the Republican Primary.
Coleman will face Mark Hancock of Houston and Kathryn York of Water Valley in the Democratic Primary.
The deadline to register to vote in the Aug. 6 Primary is July 8. Absentee voting will begin June 24.
Calhoun County will also have a school board race from district five on the ballot in November. Qualifying for that position won’t begin until Aug. 7.
