“I come from a family of educators. In every school in Calhoun County you can find an aunt or cousin that previously or presently taught or teaches there.
Once upon a time my Aunt Beth Hardin was Superintendent of Education and my Aunt Betty Edwards taught school for 42 years. I don’t believe I will match her teaching record.
I can remember playing school from a very young age so I guess teaching is in the blood of my Hardin family,” said King.
King first taught as a Chapter 1 teacher where she floated from English and math classes while tutoring and helping. She was a Chapter 1 teacher for one year, then became the fifth grade math teacher. She has been doing that for 25 years.
Last year she started teaching social studies.
She enjoys many parts of teaching. She enjoyed the fact that she was able to be around her kids all the time, and how she was able to be in all aspects of their education.
She enjoys being a small town teacher because she loves all her students and likes to know what they are doing with their lives.
Another one of her favorite things is that she is able to teach some of her students’ children.
She has been able to work with some wonderful people that she loves and respects tremendously.
“I guess after 25 years people expect retirement to be in your near future, so I’m asked that a lot. My answer is I’m taking it one year at a time. My honest answer is I’m waiting on grandchildren. I want to be that grandmother that gets to keep her grandchildren. So I’m patiently waiting! I know when that day comes and I say goodbye to my classroom, I will have a lot of emotion; but when I’m out and about, and I run into one of my students, and they call my name, I will smile!” she said.
