The Coffeeville-Calhoun Upward Bound Program partnered with the Ladies of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. to host their annual Youth Symposium recently.
The 2019 Youth Symposium theme was “Mission Possible: A Safe Space for Our Youth.” We live in a time in which protecting our youth is imperative to survival. Equipping the youth with the skills and competencies to not only advocate for themselves but also their peers is important. For parents and guardians, it is important to know and understand what affects the youth, and to be able to support and advocate on their behalf is also important.
The goal of the symposium was to create dialogue, have opportunities for youth to connect to community resources, and to provide inspiration for making positive and long-lasting change.
The presenters for the Saturday Academy Youth Symposium were Pamela Redwine and Mr. Trent Barnett of the Mississippi State Extension Service of Yalobusha and Calhoun Counties where they presented Healthy Living, Eating for life, Cooking & Meal Planning, Dietary Lifestyles, and “What’s In Your Food.”
Dr. Velinda Calvert, Mathematics Professor at Mississippi State University, presented Healthy Generations - My Future Career by providing an introductory to STEM Careers and a hands on activity.
Dr. ChakaHier Oliver of Bessemer, Alabama and Nurse Jacqueline Washington of Starkville presented “Healthy Living – Saving A Life - First Aid.”
Alkeus Campbell, Renasant Branch Manager and Dalvin Harris, presented “Healthy Choices – Choosing my Future - Financial Literacy.”
Patti Young and Renee Whitten, Family First Field Educators of Calhoun County, presented “Healthy Choices – Choosing Me - Prom Safety and Peer Pressure.”
Zeta Lambda Sigma Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority awarded all attendees with backpacks and school supplies.
