Justin Ferguson, Ben Suber, Kegan Coleman, Salena Westmoreland, and Sheriff Greg Pollan were the big local winners in Tuesday’s primary election in Calhoun County.
Justin Ferguson, of Bruce, upset incumbent District Three Supervisor Gwin Longest, of Bruce, in the Democratic Primary. Ferguson’s unofficial win total among the two district three boxes (Bruce and Banner) was 174-127 (58%).
He will advance to face Republican Gerald Thompson in the November general election.
Ben Suber, of Bruce, carried the Republican primary in the Senate District Eight race defeating Scott Griffin of Houston and Steve Whitten of Calhoun City.
The unofficial vote total for the county was Suber 1,692, Griffin 663, and Whitten 308. Suber and Griffin will next face off in a runoff on Aug. 27.
Coleman, of Calhoun City, easily carried Calhoun County in the Democratic Primary over Kathryn York of Water Valley and Mark Hancock of Houston.
Calhoun totals were Coleman 1,008, York 164, Hancock 157. Coleman and York will next meet in the Democratic runoff.
Sheriff Greg Pollan advanced to the general election defeating challenger Ray Laney, of Vardaman, in the Republican Primary. The unofficial vote total was 1,765-933 (65%).
Pollan carried every precinct in Calhoun County, but especially won big in Bruce with 86% of the vote to advance. He will face Democrat Roger Westmoreland in November.
The Calhoun County Coroner’s race was especially tight with long time incumbent Jerry Fleming being upset by challenger Salena Westmoreland, both of Calhoun City, 751-595 (56%).
There is no Republican challenger awaiting in November meaning Westmoreland, once the vote count is certified, will be elected the next coroner for the county.
Among statewide offices, those carrying Calhoun County included Tate Reeves and Jim Hood for governor, Delbert Hosemann for lieutenant governor, Michael Watson for secretary of state, Lynn Fitch for attorney general, David McRae for treasurer, and Geoffrey Yoste for transportation commissioner in Republican Primary (runoff likely on Aug. 27). Yoste and John Caldwell will be in the runoff. Bruce native Joey Grist will face the winner in November.
