Veterans’ Day programs are scheduled for Calhoun City and Bruce this Friday, Nov. 8 and next Monday, Nov. 11.
Calhoun City High School will host its annual program this Friday at 9 a.m. in the school auditorium. Everyone is welcome to attend.
Monday’s annual services on the Calhoun City and Bruce squares will begin at 10 a.m. in Calhoun City where CW2 Steven Carlson will be the guest speaker.
Carlson, 38, of Calhoun City, currently serves with the 184th Sustainment Command. He has served for 14 years and earned numerous accommodations including a Purple Heart.
The book “A Tribute to the Purple Heart Recipients of Calhoun County” will be available at the program. Purple Heart veterans still living will be honored as part of the service. They include Johnny Boyles, Joe Carnaggio, Charlie Carter, Elbie Wayne Dickerson, Larry Goodwin, Billy Mac Gore, Thomas (Butch) Harris, Larry Helms, Mallon Henry, Daniel L. Parker, George (Sonny) Casmus, Paul Russell, Buford Usry and Gail A. Wilson.
Vietnam Pins are available to any Vietnam veteran who served honorably during the Vietnam era – August 5, 1964 through May 7, 1975. For more info contact Geneise Hitt 662-637-2211.
The Bruce program will begin at 11 a.m. on the square and will be followed by a free stew lunch afterwards at the post located at 28 CR 261 in Bruce.
The VFW Auxiliary is also sponsoring a free breakfast for veterans Saturday, Nov. 9 at 8 a.m. Cost is $3 for non veterans.
You don’t have to be a member of the Auxiliary or Post to participate.
