Derma board of aldermen voted on a design for new welcome signs at the regular meeting of the board last night.
The design will be dark blue with gold banner, and white writing.
In another matter, Alderman A.G. Gibson asked Mayor Dock Gabbert and Clerk Deneen Russell if they had any idea what Walmart opening would mean for the town’s coiffers.
James said they would be paying personal tax, property tax and privilege tax and beyond that, it was unknown.
“A big part of their sales tax goes to corporate,” she said, “and right now we have no idea what their inventory will be.”
In another matter, Atty. Paul Moore said he would be sending a notice to property owner Billy Patterson since he has not responded to several letters in regard to Patterson’s dilapidated property across from Town Hall.
Alderman Gibson made a motion that town employees be given Friday, Dec. 26 as a holiday in addition to Wednesday and Thursday, Dec. 24-25. The board approved.
Gibson said the county supervisors had agreed to the same days at their meeting Monday.
The board also: granted Juanita Mays a month extension to clean up her property. She said she has hired someone to do cleanup; approved setting up a holding account for a fire rebate that was not used. Department will report to state how funds will be used for approval; approved setting up an escrow account for money seized by Derma PD; Clerk Deneen James said two had been added to the bad debt list– Anna Bardo and Sharon Glaspie.
•City Hall will be closed Tuesday, Nov. 11 for Veterans Day and Thursday and Friday, Nov. 27 and 28 for Thanksgiving.
