Mounce Supermarket in Vardaman will begin Friday offering many of the same services as the post office.
The U.S. Postal Service has announced they are opening a “Village Post Office” in Mounce Jan. 30 where customers can buy stamps, pre-paid priority mail flat rate envelopes and boxes, drop off mail and more.
Mounce manager Josh James said they will provide the postal services out of the supermarket’s interior office. A collection box for mail has been installed outside the store and larger packages needing to be mailed can be dropped off inside the store.
The hours of the post office in Vardaman are not currently scheduled to be reduced further from their current 7:30-11:30 a.m. and 1-3 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9-10:45 a.m. on Saturdays, but the new VPO in Mounce will offer more hours for customers to take advantage of USPS services. Mounce is open 7-30 a.m.-7:30 p.m. Monday-Saturday and 9 a.m.-7 p.m. on Sunday.
The Postal Service announced the concept of the VPO in July 2011 as a way to increase access to postal products and services in the more rural communities across the nation. Vardaman is only the seventh VPO to be opened in Mississippi.
