Derma Mayor Dock Gabbert said they are working on something to go in the now vacant Walmart building, but declined to give any more information at the regular meeting of the board last night.
Gabbert talked at length about the closing of the store which was a corporate decision, but said he was optimistic something else would come in the location.
“The decision was made, there is nothing you can do about it,” he said.
In another matter at the meeting, the board voted to hire two part time employees for Street and Water Supervisor Shane Childs.
Brannon Armstrong and Larry Bratton will be hired on an as-needed basis for $12 an hour.
The board agreed to sign contracts for fire protection with Calhoun Board of Supervisors and also the Calhoun County Fire Fighting Assistance Agreement.
They also voted not to close the alley between Howard Avenue and Fox Avenue as requested by a citizen.
The board voted to table purchasing a small dump trailer to pull behind a tractor. Childs got a price on a 10x12 trailer, but will get another price also.
Clerk Deneen James reported bad debts–Chris Bullard, Anna M. Karpes and Candace McGreger.
City Hall will be closed Monday, Feb. 15 for President’s Day.
The next board meeting will be Tuesday, Mar. 1.
Alderwoman Aretha Herrod was not at the meeting.
