Calhoun City aldermen authorized Mayor J.R. Denton and Clerk Raenell Moore to finalize the budget for next fiscal year after a brief discussion last Tuesday night.
Mayor Denton said they accepted the requests from the various department heads and the projects desired from each of the aldermen and converted all that to dollars and plugged it into a potential budget.
“As you can see, that’s more dollars that we wanted to spend than we anticipate getting,” Mayor Denton told the aldermen in reference to a print out the board was provided. “We’re going to have to reduce several department’s budgets.”
The board agreed for Denton and Moore to make the necessary cuts to get the budget in line so it can be presented at the Sept. 6 public hearing.
“Y’all are welcome to come and talk to me and Raenell anytime,” Denton told the board. “Y’all gave us specific items you wanted to see. We’re going to reduce dollars but that doesn’t necessarily mean we’re going to do away with your specific items. We may still do it, but the dollars is what we’re dealing with, not individual projects or purchases.”
In the only other business, the board approved the purchase of a monitoring system from Luckett Well and Pump that will send a variety of alerts to town officials when it senses a potential problem at the town well.
